Starting Again In Spring

Spring is in the air!  The days are starting to get noticeably longer and warmer.  It is time to bring out your running shoes and the dog’s Frisbee and start losing the extra pounds that winter hibernation has added!

It is not always easy to get out and exercise or have fun outdoors during the winter season. It is much more comfortable to sit in front of the fire or television wrapped in a blanket with a cup of hot soup than to go out jogging in the cold rain.

Then spring arrives and you overdo it. You make your  first spring walk or run a bit too long and over extend yourself playing with the dog in the park.  The dog loves it, but your poor muscles don’t!

When you stop working your muscles for extended periods of time they lose some of their elasticity and strength and this makes it a lot easier to injure yourself if you are not careful.

Although you may be raring to go and get back into your workout regime it is a good idea to start slowly. Make your first walks, runs and rollerblading excursions  short and gentle.  Make sure that you do not over extend your muscles and injure them. your body will thank you for it and you will be able to get back in the game a lot faster.

Of course, it is possible that you will be stiff and sore or will pull a muscle no matter how careful you think you are being. It is important to take care of these injuries before they become a chronic problem. It is an unfortunate fact that soft tissue damage can stay with you for the rest of your life if you do not take care of the problem and get the correct treatment as soon as the injury occurs.

One of the forms of treatment that you can make use of is therapeutic massage. What therapeutic massage does is stimulate the blood flow into the affected area as well as loosen the stiff muscles. The increased blood flow will carry nutrients to the injured area and help it to repair all the damage that was caused. Loosening the stiff muscles will give you immediate pain relief  by releasing the tension and by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers.

If you are an active person and want to get back into the swing of things now that spring has arrived, treat yourself to a massage and loosen up your muscles before you start your new exercise program.  Your body will thank you for it!
